Our selection of hikes on the archipelago

The Guadeloupean archipelago brings together landscapes that are very different from each other.
The island of Basse-Terre, mountainous and volcanic, hides in its tropical jungle your Ecolodge, but also waterfalls and rivers and offers you golden sand beaches. Grande-Terre, flatter and drier, offers you plateaus, mangroves and walks along the cliffs or along its white-sand coastline. Here is a small selection of the Jardin des Colibris team’s favorite hikes:

The unmissable Soufrière : The highest point of the Lesser Antilles with its 1467m altitude, the “old lady” is one of the most visited places in Guadeloupe. Starting point at the Bains Jaunes de Saint-Claude where a small parking lot awaits you. Well equipped with good shoes, k-way and water (also a change of clothes), you can enjoy one of the most beautiful landscapes of the archipelago. Allow 3 hours 45 minutes round trip to reach the summit called “La Découverte”.

Gros Morne, Deshaies : A few steps from the Jardin des Hummingbirds, the hike on the Gros Morne coastline begins. Still relatively unknown to tourists, this walk offers you a peak point of view above the village of Deshaies and the beach of Grande-Anse. The starting point is at the sports field near the village cemetery, then a path in the heart of the vegetation opens up to you. Quickly it starts to climb… then you will arrive at the “Trou Divin” from where you will see the beach of Grande-Anse like you have never seen it.

Pointe-Sable, Port-Louis : Departing from Port-Louis, a superb walk between mangroves and sea in an idyllic setting. Throughout this hike you will find beaches where you won't be able to resist a swim. Calm and transparent sea, small intimate coves, in short Pointe-Sable is a true paradise! On the other side, mangrove trees and mangroves are present all along the path. You will arrive at the end of this sandbank and will be able to admire the old sugar cane port of Beautiran. The return route is the same as the outward journey, allow around 3 hours of walking.

Pointe des Châteaux from Anse à la Gourde, Saint-François : If you started your stay in Guadeloupe at the Jardin des Colibris, you will be surprised by the change in landscape! At the very end of the island of Grande-Terre, Pointe des Châteaux with its cross rising above the ocean, facing La Désirade. Take the path starting from Anse à la Gourde beach, follow this fabulous coastal path where you will cross the coastal forest with its unique vegetation. Want a refreshing break? Think of the traditional Sorbets prepared in the Pointe des Châteaux car park. It’s a great place for sunrises…

Quiock River, Crossing Route : In a lush setting in the heart of the tropical jungle, this walk does not take you to the foot of a waterfall but takes you across the river no less than 17 times! This hike is classified as difficult ( it goes up and down, and the mud will weigh down your shoes) but is perfect for athletes looking to immerse themselves in Guadeloupean nature. The start is just opposite the Maison de la Forêt car park. Allow 4 hours of effort in an exceptional tropical atmosphere. Please note, this walk must only be done in dry weather! Take advantage of the river crossings to take a nice refreshing bath, where you can see ouassous (freshwater shrimp).

T race du Petit Malendure, Bouillante : Departure from the beach of Anse Colas, a black sand beach renowned for its exceptional seabed. 2 hours on average to complete this walk along the coast. You will be captivated by the color of the water at the foot of the cliffs, and this constant view of the pigeon islets. Just a few minutes from your Ecolodge, why not ask for a cooler at reception for a little picnic on the way back?
