The “Chanté Nwel” are evenings of traditional songs which take place during the Advent period, the weeks before Christmas.
These musical gatherings take place in neighborhoods, churches, homes or even in public places.
The objective is to bring the community together to share moments of joy, spirituality and conviviality. This musical tradition is deeply rooted in intergenerational transmission. These songs cover a wide range of themes, from the birth of Christ to local Christmas traditions and festive stories. The poetic and melodious lyrics transport participants into the spirit of the season. Traditional instruments, such as the drum, conch (a shell used as a wind instrument), and guitar, are often used to accompany the songs. However, over the years, the “Chanté Nwel” have also integrated modern instruments, broadening the musical palette. Musical styles vary, combining elements of gwoka, zouk and other Caribbean influences, creating a harmonious fusion.

How can we talk about Guadeloupean music without talking about Zouk ? “Love” or even “retro” zouk, a modern musical genre, is a West Indian creation that has conquered the whole world. Born in the 1970s with the well-known group Kassav', zouk is a fusion of musical styles such as Haitian compass, merengue, reggae and traditional Guadeloupean music.
