In search of the inhabitants of the garden...

Open your eyes wide... You are staying in an LPO, League for the Protection of Birds, refuge!

Everywhere you go while walking in Guadeloupe, you will come across little companions that you are probably not used to meeting on a daily basis. Chickens are omnipresent on the archipelago, frogs slip into damp corners at nightfall, lizards chase mosquitoes, birds sing and crabs make their way at your feet, then watch out for the iguanas that can surprise you hidden in the vegetation... We have this chance at the Jardin des Hummingbirds to evolve in an environment where nature has all its rights, and where the animals are at home there, and what a joy to live with them!

The 3 species of West Indian Hummingbirds honor us with their presence: the Madeira Hummingbird, the largest, with its red throat; the Green Falle Hummingbird and the Crested Hummingbird! Naturally present in the garden, they have gotten into the habit of coming to sip the little cocktail that we lovingly make for them: 1/4 cane sugar syrup and 3/4 water. 100% natural, they love it (as long as you clean the feeder well before serving!).

Hummingbirds are obviously the emblems of the Garden, but they are far from being the only inhabitants of the area!
Sugar eaters, Sporophiles, Yellow Warblers called “Ti-Jaune”, Guadeloupe Woodpeckers,…. in fact, they are the real owners! 25 species in total have been recorded... Among them, the Saltator Gros-Bec is one of our favorites! Discreet and timid, olive green plumage, it is a privilege to see it in the branches of the garden. You will also be able to see the Cuckoo, a protected species easily recognizable by its black and white spotted tail. Up early thanks to the time difference?
Listen carefully: the Gray Tyrant can be heard very early in the morning, its song “pipirit’… pippirit’…” is also the origin of the local expression “au pipirite chantant” which means “at sunrise day ". Called “Tremblè” (trembler in Creole) or even “Cocobino” for its song sometimes similar to a “co-co dino” roll, the Brown Trembleur is a protected species which is also quite well heard with a song described as melodious and nervous.
You will recognize his round, yellow eyes.
The birds are not the only ones whose address is the Jardin des Hummingbirds... Hermit Bernard will greet you as you pass, the frogs will rock your nights and the anoles, mabouyas and chickens take care of the insects!
And for the lucky ones, maybe you will come across a raccoon called here “racoon”… A few years ago we welcomed Billy, who stayed with us for a few months before resuming his journey into the heart of the Guadeloupean jungle.

Help us follow the activity of our feathered singers! Open your eyes wide and tell us how many species you observed during your stay at the Jardin des Hummingbirds!
